Boats / Jetski Insurance Facts
Insurance for watercraft is very similar to insuring an automobile. On the water, you would still want to have liability coverage if you hit another boat - same with uninsured motorists if you are hit by another boater but this is called uninsured boaters coverage. If you want to cover your boat for any damage it would sustain, you would still want comprehensive and collision coverage and you can have medical payments coverage for bodily injury for you or anyone on your boat if injured in a boating incident. Below are some differences when insuring watercraft and other thoughts:
Personal effects - these are the "loose" items you typically carry on your watercraft such as coolers, skis, portable radios, fishing equipment, clothing, cameras, cooking equipment, etc. We typically say that if you could pick up your boat, turn it over and shake it - what falls out is your personal effects. These can be covered on many watercraft policies for a small additional premium.
Roadside Assistance - for watercraft, this typically would cover you if your watercraft is on a trailer being towed. You may have roadside for your vehicle, but it does not extend with most companies to the boat you are towing. It would be sad to see a tow vehicle moving your car or truck which broke down and leave your boat behind.
Emergency Towing - this is different from Roadside Assistance. This coverage is for on-water towing in the event your boat becomes disabled while on the water.
Many watercraft policies limit your navigation limit to say, inland lakes and rivers. In Southern Nevada, most people with boats and jetskis only go to Lake Mead. For larger watercraft, you need to let us know where you will be navigating your vessel.
What is your boat worth? If you have comprehensive & collision coverage on your boat, you will, as a minimum, always receive the "Actual Cash Value" of that boat - this is the market value of the boat at the time of loss and very much like the valuation when your auto is damaged. However, some boat policies also offer enhanced coverage such as agreed value and total loss replacement for a small additional premium. To get these coverages on your watercraft, call us and we'll explain what you have to provide or what is required to have these coverages.
Many people do not insure their boats or jetskis because it is not "required" under Nevada law. If you have a loan on your watercraft, your loan company will require insurance to cover their asset.
Your boat is not covered under a homeowner's policy, so if your home is damaged and the boat is in the garage or along side and is damaged, it will not be covered. |
CLASSIC AUTO
At Sage Insurance we know your Classic Car is one of your most prized possessions. If you treat it like a prized possession and not just another vehicle in the household, you can expect big savings when you insure it. But, there are guidelines you need to know about and understand. Things like:
- How old does it have to be?
- What's the minimum value?
- Are there driving restrictions?
- Can I park it in front of my house?
- Do I need an appraisal?
- What if it's my only car?

Classic Auto Insurance Facts
A Classic auto is just a car so why does it get special attention? Well, for most people who have a classic auto, it is their "baby". Think of Tim Allen in the TV show Home Improvement - it was the most important material item in his life!! Insurance companies know how important your classic vehicle is to you and there are special auto policies designed just for classics (and exotics). There are, however, requirements to insure these vehicles but if your vehicles qualifies, your rate is substantially lower than if you insure it on a standard auto policy. The companies that specialize in classics require that most or all of the following be met in order to qualify your vehicle as a classic:
- A Classic Auto is typically defined as a stock vehicle built from the turn of the last century through the 1960's. Some 70s and 80s vehicles can be considered if the vehicle shows a trend of increasing market value and if it is being treated like a collectible by the owner.
- Exotic vehicles are considered collectible cars typically if they are 1987 or newer and less than 3,000 were produced per year. The value of these cars should be over $40,000.
- You must have at least one "regular use" vehicle for each licensed operator in your household (and this includes roommates). For example, if there are 3 licensed operators in your household, you must have 3 vehicles on your automobile policy and the classic auto would be your 4th vehicle. Most companies do not consider motorcycles or company vehicles as a regular use vehicles.
- The classic vehicle must be secured in a locked facility - no exceptions.
- Some companies limit annual mileage on this vehicle to less than 2500/year. Many collectors drive these vehicles less than 500 miles/year.
- The usage of these vehicles must be "limited" - that means that it can NEVER be used for normal or backup transportation such as driving to work, school, or running errands. Typically it is used for car shows, parades, club events and the "Sunday afternoon drive."
- The company requires a copy of your personal auto policy showing the regular use vehicles in the household. The coverage on the classic auto cannot be higher than on your regular use autos.
- The premium is determined by the value of your car as a classic or exotic vehicle. It helps to have an appraisal or at least comparable values from a collectible car magazine.
Other vehicles can often be written on a Classic Auto Policy subject to their own special requirements. Some of these include military vehicles, fire trucks and commercial vehicles older than 1970, lowriders, street rods, replicas and vintage motorcycles. Each of these vehicles as well as the classics and exotics must have a minimum value to be considered for insurance under this program. It is not designed for the old car you just happen to have that hasn't been restored, have no plans to restore, and it's just an extra car.
At Sage Insurance, we welcome your classic and exotic vehicles if we also insure your personal use vehicles. |
MOTORCYCLES & ATV’S
At Sage Insurance, our experienced agents will explain the things you'll need to consider when insuring your Motorcycle or ATV.
Motorcycle coverage is a lot like car insurance with some differences.
- Custom Parts & Equipment is commonplace (more)
- Trailers (used to transport your bike) (more)
- Motorized vehicles (like ATV's) are NOT covered under a standard homeowners policy. (more)
Call us at 702-547-1900 or read below for a more detailed description of coverage for your Motorcycle or ATV. You can also fill out our contact form and someone will contact you!
Motorcycle / ATV Insurance Facts
Motorcycles and ATV's are motorized vehicles just like autos. However, motorcycles cannot normally be added to an auto policy so you will need to purchase a separate motorcycle policy. The same primary coverages that are available for auto insurance are identical for motorcycles and ATV's such as liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist, medical payments, comprehensive, collision and towing or roadside assistance. However, there are a few other factors to consider when insuring these vehicles:
- Many riders add custom parts and equipment to their bikes and this can run into thousands of dollars of added equipment. Some examples of custom equipment or parts includes chrome accessories, wheels, custom paint, saddlebags, windshields, engine modifications, sidecars and safety riding apparel and helmets. Some companies do not provide any coverage for this and some give you, say, $1,000 add-on equipment as part of the policy. You can increase the coverage on your motorcycle policy for an additional premium. You just need to give us the total and we'll add it on for you.
- Many people have trailers used to haul their cycles. In some cases, the trailer can be added to the motorcycle policy and in other cases, it can be added to the auto policy. Trailer's are not automatically covered unless they are insured.
- Many people think ATV's are covered under their homeowner's policy since they are not required to be licensed - that is only true if the ATV is used to "service your property". Since most of us don't live in a home on many acres where we need a vehicle to service our property, your ATV needs to be insured separately to be covered.

MOTORHOMES / RV’S / TRAVEL TRAILERS
Motorhomes, RV's and Travel Trailers insure similar to personal automobiles, BUT there are some very important differences that you need to consider.
Besides being larger than the typical car, some people actually live in their motorhome whether for a short vacation trip or permanently. Consider some of these questions?
- What about my personal possessions like clothes, ipod, etc.?
- What if I break down? Towing is surely more of an issue than towing a car.
- What if I'm on vacation and someone gets hurt while in my motor home?
- If I have towing coverage on my car, would it extend to the Travel Trailer I'm pulling?

Motor Homes / RV Insurance Facts
With the exception of Travel Trailers, RV's are motorized vehicles which means that the insurance for these vehicles is very much like insuring automobiles. However, there are additional coverages that can be added to these policies that are specific to RV's and should be considered when purchasing RV insurance. RV's, in most cases, can be added to an automobile policy - however, you can then only purchase auto-type coverages without the benefit of many coverages that RV'ers want. For that reason, at Sage Insurance we encourage our clients to insure under an RV policy designed to meet their individual needs.
As with private passenger vehicles, RV's are required to have insurance and you can purchase the typical coverages that you purchase for your automobiles - i.e., liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist, medical payments, comprehensive and collision coverages and roadside/towing. Below are other considerations for RV insurance:
- Some people make their RV their permanent residence. With an RV policy, we can add "full-timers" coverage to the policy which gives our insured coverages they would want to include when considering their RV their home. Some of these coverages includes Full Timer's Personal Liability, Full Timer's medical payments, and Storage Shed contents coverage.
- If the RV sustains damage and you have comprehensive and collision coverage, the normal adjustment is similar to adjusting an auto loss. However, on many RV policies, you can purchase either agreed value coverage or total loss replacement coverage subject to certain requirements.
- Most RV policies include Emergency Expense coverage up to a limit of $750. This would pay for temporary living facilities, transportation expenses and cost of returning the RV if it becomes disabled due to a covered loss more than 50 miles from your primary residence. If you are a full-timer, additional coverage can be purchased.
- Most policies include Vacation Liability of at least $10,000. This would pay for bodily injury or property damage which you are legally responsible for as a result of an accident while the RV is used as a temporary vacation resident.
- Your personal belongings can be added to the policy in increments of, typically, $1,000. If you have a loss or damage to your contents, this would pay the replacement coverage on your belongings subject to a small deductible.
- Trailer coverage - this provides physical damage for utility trailers and tow dollies used with your motor home. Some companies include a minimum amount if you purchase comprehensive and collision coverage and can increase the value for a small premium.
- Roadside assistance - this coverage is a bit more expensive on a motorhome/trailer than on a vehicle but is well worth it if your RV or trailer has to be towed - the cost of towing these large vehicles to the nearest repair facility can be extremely expensive.
- Travel Trailers do not have motors; therefore, you do not have liability coverage for a trailer - the liability will come from the vehicle that is towing the trailer. However most of the coverages listed above are all available for trailers (including in part 5th wheels, mounted campers, pop-up trailers and conventional trailers).
