This is, finally, a good change.  The primary reason the changes are taking place is to minimize the number of drivers on our roads that have no insurance.  Minimum liability insurance is mandatory in the state of Nevada, but many drivers skate the issue by various means.  Nevada DMV is trying to stop the practice by more rigorous enforcement rules.  Here are the highlights:

1. You must now present proof of Nevada insurance when you register a vehicle. You can no longer simply sign a statement that says you have insurance... you have to show a valid insurance ID Card. Your vehicle can not be insured in another state if you register here.  Every state has state-specific laws governing vehicle insurance and you must adhere to the laws of Nevada to register a vehicle here.

2. Nevada DMV no longer "forgives" you for a lapsed insurance policy (they used to forgive a week of no insurance if you could prove you then purchased it). If you let your insurance lapse, you will be fined $250! Even for ONE day!

3. As of this writing, the rules are new to all of us and we're just learning them. Nevada DMV is saying that they will be able to "verify" insurance coverage at the time of registration. That will take some sophisticated real-time computer savvy, but if they can, that is a good thing; especially for those of us that have been "carrying" the slackers who try to circumvent the law. They say that they will crack down on residents that continue to register their vehicle in another state, but actually live and work here. Another plus for those that have obeyed the law all along.

Nevada DMV also indicates that as of March 15, 2010 the ability to verify insurance will be available on-line for both motorists and agents.  We truly hope that is a fact!  What a boon to the integrity of both honest motorists and licensed agents here in Nevada.  We applaud the new rules and look forward to the day when "mandatory insurance" really means "mandatory insurance."
